Who doesn’t love planning a vacation? But, as a vegan, some extra planning is always required, especially if you’re looking at all-inclusive options. As you probably already know, many vacation destinations usually cater more to vegetarians than vegans. But don’t let this put you off from planning your next trip, especially when you have our essential tips on hand.
Essential Travel Tips for Vegans
There’s no reason to be filled with dread when boarding a weekend cruise or travelling to a destination you’ve been looking forward to for months. And you certainly don’t need to live off of salad and fries. Here are some tips to keep in mind when planning your next vacation:
Research Vegan-Friendly Resorts
Not all all-inclusives are created equal. Some are fantastic for plant-based eaters, others… not so much. With this in mind, you want to research resorts that advertise vegan or plant-based options. Sites such as HappyCow and TripAdvisor can help you here. There are also a few chains that are known for catering to dietary needs.
Contact the Resort in Advance
Before you book and hope for the best, rather contact the resort you have in mind and specifically ask whether they cater to vegans. Can their chefs prepare special meals if needed, and does this apply to all meals? Resorts that are well-versed in catering to vegans won’t leave you wondering whether they actually understood you. If they’re hesitant, rather keep looking at other options.
Check the Buffet and À La Carte Mix
Buffets can work well for vegans, but be cautious of hidden animal products such as butter, meat broth and fish sauce. Rather find out more about whether items are labelled with ingredients or symbols. You may also want to learn some local phrases to ensure you can ask staff about meals and ingredients.
Pack Smart Snacks
Even at the best resorts, there might be times when options are limited, like during excursions. Rather pack a few vegan-friendly snacks such as trail mix, protein bars, mini plant milks and instant oatmeal cups.
Download Vegan Travel Apps
There are plenty of great vegan apps that you can download for your travels, such as HappyCow and abillion. Even Google Translate can be a big help should you need to travel outside of your resort.
Ask About Drinks
Some all-inclusive packages include wine and cocktails, but not all alcohol is vegan (especially wine and beer). Don’t be shy to ask about the ingredients that go into their cocktails, especially the creamy ones. Many top resorts also stock vegan-friendly brands; you simply have to enquire.
Book Excursions with Food in Mind
If you're doing a full-day tour or boat trip, ask ahead if vegan meals can be arranged. If you’re not sure, or the staff is unsure, this gives you a chance to at least pack your own lunch, just in case.
Be Friendly and Clear with Staff
Kindness goes a long way. Many chefs enjoy the challenge of creating special vegan meals if you ask nicely. Don’t be shy—speak up early in your stay.
Your Vegan Vacay Awaits!
With these tips in mind, you can easily arrange an all-inclusive vacation that won’t leave you feeling hungry and unfulfilled. Sure, you will need to do some extra research, but it will be well worth it.
